Nokia E-61 Mobile Phone

The Nokia E61 is just crying out to be called the "Nokiaberry" - and the reasons for that are obvious. The large screen with the QWERTY keyboard arranged underneath bears a striking resemblance to the classic Blackberry format, but unlike Motorola's Moto Q device, Nokia have styled the E61 so that you can instantly tell that it's really a Nokia (OK, perhaps it reminds us of a Stretch limo a little too.)

This is certainly a sophisticated device - the Nokia E61 is a 3G handset with quad-band GSM support, WiFi and Bluetooth. There's a large 320x240 pixel display in 16 million colours, combined with the Symbian Series 60 OS (version 9.1). Navigation is through a Nokia-style mini joystick and softkeys, so this should be pretty familiar territory for Nokia users.

There's no camera on the Nokia E61 - this is useful because many businesses have serious issues with digital camera proliferation, especially in sensitive commercial environments. It does come with expandable memory using miniSD cards (and there's a decent 75Mb of internal memory too). The Nokia E61 is quite a capable multimedia device, with support for MP3, AAC and Real Video and Audio. As the E61 is a 3G device, it can also download a variety of streaming multimedia.

You can tell by the E61's look though that this device is designed for email, and the E61 supports standard Internet protocols (POP3/IMAP/SMTP) and also Blackberry Email Connect, Visto and Seven Always On push email systems. There's also an instant messaging client compatible with Yahoo! and AOL. There's an XHTML web browser too, which takes advantage of the E61's 320 pixel wide display (but it's not as wide as the fantastic display on the Nokia 9300 and 9500 devices).

WiFi is included on the E61, and the handset can even support VOIP telephone calls over its TCP/IP connection. There's Bluetooth too on the E61, and of course you can also connect it to a PC using a USB cable.

The camera on the E61.. well, it doesn't exist. Perhaps Nokia have learned a little from the launch of the Nokia9500 , where the camera actually put some corporate customers off. This means that there's no 3G calling either, but then the Nokia E61 isn't that kind of device.

Software support on the E61 is good - you can view and edit Microsoft Office documents, view Adobe PDFs and even work with ZIP files. The Symbian Series 60 OS is also expandable, so you can add more applications. The E61 also has a comprehensive set of PIM applications preloaded, and it comes with just about everything you would expect from a device of this type.

Between the 4mm in extra depth and the matte plastic finish, the N97 is much easy to hold, and then there's the sliding screen and the superb keyboard below it.

If you've seen pictures of the N97 you've probably seen it on its back with the slide open and the screen tilting up. When open, the screen sits at an angle just shy of 45 degrees, making it easy to read while using the well-spaced keyboard, or navigating the menus with the large five-way nav key. We love this design, every part of it feels slick and deliberate; from the smooth sliding mechanism to the position of the keys, Nokia clearly has user experience at the front of its design philosophy. The only oversight we can find is the absence of a "back" key on the keyboard for stepping backwards through the menu system. It's easy enough to reach up to the touchscreen, but this gets annoying after the fourth or fifth back-step in a complex menu tree.

Which brings us to the downside in this aforementioned Nokia design philosophy. While the physical design of the N97 is excellent, the Series 60 platform is starting to show its age next to the shiny new touchscreen platforms from Google and Apple. The N97 runs on Series 60 v5, and while this is the latest version of the platform, trying to navigate through the system is becoming tedious — even for us, who know the system so well. Completing simple tasks like turning off input sound effects or changing the ringtone takes six steps and has us wishing Nokia had a simpler menu with even simpler menu titles like "Sounds", rather than the legacy titling from a decade of its preceding platforms.

The 3.5-inch touchscreen is one of the phone's outstanding elements. Nokia uses resistive touchscreen technology, which compared with capacitive touchscreens, is considered the lesser technology, especially in regards to responsiveness. Nokia takes this assumption and turns it on its head, delivering outstanding responsiveness and a bright, colourful screen to boot. The screen is easy to read and our test videos look fantastic.

Nokia N81 Mobile Phone

It has been nearly 65 days since I went without a phone set change, leading to snide remarks from my co-workers about my fidelity to Apple’s iPhone. Despite getting frustrated with iPhone’s email application (I carry a Blackberry to get some serenity) and poky Edge connections, I avoided the hassle of switching to another phone.

That was up until yesterday evening, when I came back home to find the new Nokia N81 8GB music phone, the cornerstone of the company’s big push into music-related services. Nokia (NOK) had sent me a review unit, and when I opened the elegantly packaged box, I knew I had to try it out. It is a handsome device - very sleek and elegant thanks to its brushed metal-black lacquer finish, rounded edges and crisp screen.

And even before it was fully powered up, I was betting this device was going to exceed my expectations. Did it?

Nokia N81, which is going to set you back about $550, is a slider phone with ample storage capacity to let you play back music for a long, long time. The keypad, which slides out smoothly, has recessed keys and still is good enough for blind dialing - that is, dialing without looking at the phone.

Being a music phone, all the music-playback functionality is built into the top half, so you don’t have slide out the keypad to control the phone. It is a quad band GSM phone that comes with a 2-megapixel camera, which can also be controlled without sliding out the keypad.

The keys on this phone are too crammed together, but I can understand that engineering a complex multifunction device isn’t easy. Still, the dial and stop buttons are pushed to the side and are tough to use. The navigation pad that dominates the faceplate is good way to navigate through many functions on the phone, and I appreciate the special music-navigation key that was added by Nokia.

Nokia N81 easily connected to my home network, making it ready for Voice-over-WiFi calls via Truphone. A special download from the Nokia Europe web site made syncing the address book and calendar on my Mac a snap. The Nokia multimedia transfer utility (in beta for now) was simple enough to use and is a pretty decent music manager.

Plugging in a special USB cable (different connector compared to your typical cable) and attaching to my Macbook allowed me to easily transfer music purchased from Amazon Music Store and other MP3 files to the device. It took about four hours to fill it up, but I managed to get all my favorite tracks on the flash drive. I was all set to rock the casbah when reality set in.

The device behaved like a three-year-old throwing a tantrum. Unless this is an especially buggy device, N81 has to be one of the worst Nokia phones I have ever used and would be loathe to recommend it to anyone.

It is underpowered and the Symbian S60 OS behaves like Windows ME. Remember that piece of junk? Well this is worse. It takes more than 10 seconds to open a text message. Switching between applications is akin to me running - out of breath. One has to constantly reboot the phone to even make phone calls.

Sure, the music playback quality was flawless and even at full volume didn’t distort a bit. The regular stereo-headset jack worked with all sorts of headphones - Bose, Nokia, Shure and Ultimate Ears. And the tunes were crystal clear.

However, getting the music app (or any app for that matter) to open was a torture test. It was frustrating enough for me to not even test any of the other features, such as the video camera or Lifeblog or NGage gaming.

In comparison to the Nokia N95, or even the older N71 and N73 phones, N81 is pokey, and a major disappointment. It is going to be packed up and shipped back, pronto. Nokia, which often delivers phones that I love, has flubbed this one.

There is a new firmware for 5800 doing rounds in the inter-circles of web since June 22. Available for a selected few product codes (maily HongKong) and the firmware version is v21.0.101 and not v31.0.15 as has been widely rumored in blogosphere, which was previously covered in our blog .

While there has been no official changelong released by Nokia, users who have updated their firmware have reported improved browsing experience on the default symbian browser and as with every firmware update the phone is more responsive and faster with the new update.

There is a marginal improvement in the camera performance as well, which has been one of the most sought after feature by most of the 5800 users, ever since it was launched. Its good to know that Nokia have finally responded to requests from 5800 users. However Kinetic scrolling continues to baffle 5800 as of now.
